Adam
Connell, recent chemical engineering graduate from Leeds University, will be
talking about his course and summer work and getting his first job with
consultants Arup.
The internationally renowned
Newark School of violin making and repair (now part of Lincoln College) provides
a wide range of practical instrument making skills for violin, viola and cello.
It also teaches professional techniques for the repair and restoration of
stringed instruments covering the main requirements of the violin trade. This visit will showcase the skills and
processes used in the construction and repair of violins. Places are limited – names please to the

A
discussion on how the technology embedded in Guided Missiles has evolved. What the driving forces were and the
challenges the technology faces. The
talk will cover a range of missile technologies covering Seeker technology,
Guidance and Control, Warhead and Propulsion techniques of Air to Air, Air to
Surface and Surface to Air missile types.
As well as being the Society’s
Hon Secretary and a Civil Engineer by day, Alex is the volunteer Signal and
Telegraph Superintendent of the Midland Railway – Butterley, a heritage railway
in Derbyshire. The talk will review the
origins of railway signalling systems in the 19th century,
developments through the 20th century and today, and the challenges
of maintaining 100+ year old technology (and buildings) in the 2010’s.
