The Bourne to Saxby railway, opened in 1893, was one of the first to have a comprehensive set of photographs taken as a record of its construction. These provide an early and literal snapshot of civil engineering at that time, with a mix of traditional techniques and the latest technology.

The 2011 Annual General Meeting will be followed by a talk by Captain Geoff Dyer, former RAF pilot. The talk will look into who really invented the ‘bouncing bomb’. There is however no doubting the bravery of the crews who took part in the raid. 53 of the 133 airmen were killed before the night was out.The Gateperson will be instructed and empowered to be able to sign people in as they arrive (from 7.15pm) and will provide directions to the meeting room.

Practical Action is a development charity with a difference. For over 40 years, it has been working closely with some of the world’s poorest people - using simple technology to fight poverty and transform their lives for the better.
David Hallett will start with some information about Practical Action, explain some of the technical solutions that it has developed, it's role as a repository of ideas and the leverage which it gains from its database.
He will then move onto the role that it plays in relation to sustainability and climate change A discussion about the relevance of some of these ideas to our own world will follow, bringing in some of the ideas of the charity's founder, E F Schumacher, author inter alia of "Small is Beautiful"

Lecture – Falkirk Wheel

Richard Moses of Farndon, who used to work at Butterley Engineering and had a role in the design and manufacture of the Falkirk Wheel, will give an illustrated talk on the Falkirk Wheel. The parts of the Falkirk Wheel were carefully constructed and assembled, like one giant Meccano set at Butterley Engineering Steelworks in Derbyshire. The team there carefully assembled the 1,200 tonnes of steel, painstakingly fitting the pieces together to an accuracy of just 10 mm to ensure a perfect final fit.

“The Development and Decline of the Nottinghamshire Mining Industry” – speaker David Amos

Coal mining is in the blood of former miner David Amos, whose father and grandfather also worked in the industry.
David worked at Annesley Colliery for 24 years and is now a historian and project manager for the Selstonia Living Heritage Project in Selston. He is carrying out a major research project into the 1984 Miner’s Strike for his MPhil degree.
David will be joining us to provide an insight into the history of the Nottinghamshire Mining Industry.

Visit to National Grid Staythorpe Substation

Meet at the National Grid Staythorpe Substation main entrance just past Averham village on Staythorpe Road (signed Staythorpe and Power Station). If you get to the level crossing you have gone too far! Please note that the tour will start at 7.30 prompt and latecomers will not be able to be admitted.
We will have a short introductory talk and safety briefing about the substation and high voltage equipment, followed by a walk around the outdoor substation site to see how the electrical power we use is transformed and controlled on its way from the Power Stations to our homes. The visit is restricted to members/guests over 16 years of age, sensible shoes should be worn (the visit will involve some walking over loose chippings) and to avoid any health risk, the visit is not open to anyone with an electro-medical device (e.g. pacemaker) fitted. NOTE: umbrellas are NOT allowed on site, so please bring a hat/coat if it is wet.
The visit is limited to a maximum number of 20, so all places must be pre-booked to avoid disappointment. This meeting will commence with the Annual General Meeting prior to the Lecture 'Volume Production of Mechanical Watches' by Geoff Evans.

Society member Geoff Evans is the former National Secretary and current Treasurer of the British Horological Federation, supporting the educational work of the British Horological Institute based in Upton.
Geoff worked for Smiths Industries Watch Co in Ystradgynlais near Swansea for many years, and will detail some of the technicalities of watch production in volume.

The English Electric F6 Lightning

Lecture – The English Electric F6 Lightning – Mr Dave Bonsell

The presentation will revolve around the Lightning Preservation Group set up in the late 80's to
preserve two English Electric F6 Lightnings. Topics covered will include the development of the
Lightning, archive photos and video of the aircraft when in service, also why and how our group
started, some photos of what we have to do to maintain our two aircraft in a fully serviceable
condition (CAA will not allow them to be flown).

Finally some photos of the re-build of our QRA hangar "Quick Reaction Alert" hangar originally at
RAF Wattisham housing two Lightnings during the Cold War days at the ready to respond in
minutes to foreign intrusion from unwanted aircraft.

Lecture - Imperial Airships

Imperial Airships – Alan Brittan

Alan Brittan is an Industrial Archaeologist, who has made a special study of the Imperial
Airships Scheme proposed in 1924, which on a global scale, was the largest project of its kind.
Two ships were proposed, as a competition between two design teams but it was still seen
that both of these ships were unique prototypes.

Not until the Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin II some seven years later would newly designed
commercial passenger airships of this scale take to the skies.
On completion in October 1929, the R101 ship was the largest man made object ever to fly, the
only competition was from Germany with the smaller LZ127 "Graf Zeppelin".

The talk will cover the design and construction of the two ships, and their test flights, leading to
the ultimate destruction of the R101, and the abandoning of the project.
